Electric Choice:

What's It All About?

Today, deregulation has become a household term. Competition now is driving the utility industry and consumers are faced with more choices than ever. Informed consumers will find it easier to manage these choices.

Consumer choice in Pennsylvania increased significantly when the Electric Generation Customer Choice Act was passed into law in 1996. For the first time ever, Pennsylvania electric customers could shop for and choose their electric generation supplier.

As part of the statewide consumer education effort - and our ongoing effort to become your objective source for Electric Choice information -- Duquesne Light Company (DLC) is reaching out to all of its customers to teach them how to shop for and select an electric generation supplier.

So, what's it all about? How does it work? The following tips and suggestions are important issues to consider as you review information from licensed electric generation suppliers:

DLC Tip 1: Is this supplier licensed by the PUC? It's against the law in Pennsylvania to offer electric generation service without being licensed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC). A list of licensed suppliers is available from Duquesne Light.

DLC Tip 2: Know your "price to compare." This is your key to shopping. It's the price you pay Duquesne Light for electric generation and transmission. Compare it to supplier prices to see if you'll save money.

DLC Tip 3: Where and how does this supplier generate electricity? Depending on your preferences, you might want to ask for more in-depth information from a supplier. For example: Do you prefer electricity generated by renewable sources? Does it make a difference where a generation plant is located?

DLC Tip 4: What are my billing options? Some suppliers will bill you separately; others will charge for their services on your Duquesne Light bill. Some may offer Internet billing or direct withdrawal from your bank account.

DLC Tip 5: Does the supplier have off-peak prices? Some suppliers may offer higher or lower prices at different times of the day. When do you use the most electricity? When is this supplier's price per kWh highest?

Regardless of whom you choose to generate your electricity, Duquesne Light Co. will continue to deliver your power safely and reliably.
